National High School Chinese Public Speaking Competition

To give our HCL students more opportunities to develop their oratorical and critical thinking skills, two of our students Luo Rong Rong and Teo Wei Qing represented the school to take part in the National High School Chinese Public Speaking Competition. Luo Rong Rong managed to get into the top 15 and in the finals, emerged 5th.

The competition judge, Dr Chen Zhi Quan, commented that she did well in using a tongue twister to convey her speech across.

Max Kok, our Sec 2 EVGian, has emerged 3rd in the National Schools Xinyao Songwriting Competition. His song, My Mother (我妈), captured the hearts of the judges, who commented that it was the only piece which brimmed of love in the songwriting category. Well done Max!

Reading Programme

This event provides a platform for our students to engage in meaningful and positive interactions with students from other countries. After this experience, our students have gained more confidence in expressing themselves and are in the process of becoming eloquent speakers.

Over 30 teams from China and Singapore had participated in this International Competition. We are glad that one of our students TEO XIN YU from 2CMT has attained the Second Prize.

Reflections:

In the 3 days of workshop, we have learnt the value of respect and concern for both self and others as well as working cooperatively with one another. We accomplished this by exploring different roles and situations spontaneously. Improvisation opens up an effective and powerful medium for us to create an independent and personal narrative and allows us to exercise our creative sensibilities.

                                                                                                                  ~ Pamela

This competition is indeed an eye opener for us. We get to interact with participants from different schools, forging friendships with them. We really have a LOT of fun.

                                                                                                                 ~ Zhou Qing

Theatersports is a very unique and fun filled competition. The workshops were enriching and enjoyable mostly because of the different yet interesting games, an interactive instructor, sociable facilitators and lastly, encouraging “competitors”. Before the competition, we exchanged greetings and well wishes with one another to do our very best. This is indeed worth complimenting, considering how we met each other for only 3 days. Even though we did not do exceptionally well in the competition, it was still an enriching experience and a fabulously awesome one!
