Debate Division

debate1.jpgThe Debate Division saw its beginnings as the Debating and Oratorical Society when it was first formed in 2003. It has now joined forces with the Creative Circle to form the English Literary Drama and Debate Society in 2012. Since its inception, the Debate Division has forged itself as one of the premier CCAs in Evergreen Secondary School.

In addition to improving their general knowledge and sharpening their critical thinking skills, the DD has provided opportunities for its members to represent the school in numerous inter-school debating and oratorical competitions over the years.

The school debating team has proved to be a source of pride to Evergreen Secondary, making its mark as a rising force in the secondary school debating circle.

The Debate Division has helped groomed our members to blossom into confident individuals. It is no surprise that a number of them have become school leaders, holding important and influential positions in the School Prefectorial Board.

It has also organized intra-class and inter-house debates and oratorical competitions, thus providing opportunities for non-members to represent their class in competitive debates and oratorical competitions.

The Debate Division itself can look back with pride at its own achievements. It will not only continually strive to be a force in debate competitions, but also provide more opportunities for members and non-members alike to improve their confidence and critical thinking skills.

Secondary Two Debate Championship 2015

Over the course of three days, ELDDS held a Secondary 2 Inter-class Debate Championship. There were 5 preliminary rounds and two best teams from the Express and normal streams respectively went into the finals. The teams did put up exciting debates and it was a close fight between them.

The best speakers at the preliminary rounds really shone in their delivery and had the gift of the gab. They stood out among the rest as confident speakers so they really deserved being awarded the Best Speaker at the respective round. They were as follows:

Best Speaker at the Preliminary Rounds

Maybelle Ong Hui Leng from 2 Integrity

Gabriella Chua Xin Na from 2 Enterprise

Lin Michelle Mercado from the Express Swing team

Ros Dayanti Bte Baharudin from 2 Character

and Pamela Lee from the Normal Academic/Technical Swing team.

The teams who beat the rest and went into the finals were exciting to watch. The debate was a really mean battle and the result was a spilt of 2-1 for both streams. The result was as follows:

Singapore Secondary Schools Debate Championships 2015

SSSDC.jpg
On Friday, 10 April, the EVG debate team, Luke Tan, Stella Lee, Nur Sabrina, Dean Chua and Hayden Yeo, made it to the Semi-Finals after winning at the Quarter-Finals. At the Semi-Finals, the team was to compete against Kent Ridge Secondary School on the impromptu motion “THBT politicians should only be allowed to serve in office for a limited period of time.” as the opposition team.
It was a tough fight as both teams were pretty on par. It was indeed an epic battle. It was to anticipate the results to either reach the Grand Finals, or to lose and end the battle.
Sadly, despite their best efforts, our team had lost with a spilt decision 2-3 by the adjudicators. Nevertheless our achievement was unprecedented. The team emerged as semi-finalists among 41 teams in Division 3, thus accomplishing a great feat.
Other than that, the unprecedented achievement was that Nur Sabrina of 5 Dynamic and Stella Lee of 4 Respect emerged as the Top 10 Best Speakers among 41 teams who took part at the tournament. They were the 8th and 9th Best Speaker respectively based on the scores at the preliminary rounds. Congratulations to the girls!

Indeed, the team has made the school proud with these unprecedented results.

School wide Debate Programme

The Debate Division also organizes the Inter-House Debate Competition each year to ignite and fan the passion for debate in the Evergreen community. Students from different classes from all levels are warmly welcomed to grease the wheels of their intellect and persuasion. The competition complements the English Department’s Debate Skills Programme which is conducted with the Secondary 2 English classes.
